5 days in Puglia: 3 amazing itineraries

5 days in Puglia: 3 amazing itineraries

Puglia is one of those regions of Italy that makes you fall in love at first sight. If you’ve been following our travels, you’ll already know how much we love this corner of southern Italy!

After exploring Puglia ourselves and sharing detailed guides to the towns and cities we visited, we kept hearing the same question: what if you only have 5 days in Puglia?

Don’t worry: you can still have a wonderful trip. In this guide, we’ve put together three different Puglia 5-day itineraries so you can choose the one that suits you best. The first takes you through beautiful towns and cities, the second focuses on the beaches of Salento, and the third combines sightseeing with time by the sea.

Whether this is your first visit or you’re returning to explore somewhere new, these routes will help you decide what to see in Puglia in 5 days without trying to fit the entire region into one short holiday.

Three ways to spend 5 days in Puglia

Our tip: Puglia is a large region, so don’t treat these three routes as a single 15-day checklist. Pick one itinerary, allow time to enjoy each stop and check your arrival and departure airports before deciding where to spend the night.

Itinerary 1: Puglia in 5 Days – The most beautiful towns and cities

If you love wandering through old towns, discovering hidden corners and enjoying Italian food, this is the Puglia 5-day itinerary we’d suggest for your first visit.

We start in Bari, Puglia’s lively capital, then travel down the Adriatic coast and into the picturesque Valle d’Itria before ending in Lecce. If you’re wondering where to base yourself, take a look at our guide to the best areas to stay in Puglia.

Day 1: Bari and its atmospheric old town

Bari old town, a must-see on a five-day Puglia itinerary

In our opinion, Bari is one of the most underrated cities in Italy. Its greatest charm lies in Bari Vecchia, the old town, where narrow lanes and weathered buildings make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.

We fell in love with this area, and it’s home to many of the best things to see in Bari. Wander around without a strict plan and enjoy the everyday life unfolding in its streets.

Don’t overlook the newer part of the city, either. Teatro Petruzzelli is one of Italy’s largest theatres, while Palazzo Mincuzzi is a beautiful Art Nouveau building. Another striking sight is Palazzo Fizzarotti, with its unusual Oriental-inspired architectural details.

Connecting the old and newer districts is Bari’s seafront promenade, one of the city’s highlights. Make time for a stroll along the waterfront during your first day.

And of course, no trip to Bari would be complete without tasting its local food! From traditional dishes to tasty street food, there are plenty of reasons to sit down for a proper meal. We’ve also shared our favourite places to eat in our guide to the best restaurants in Bari.

Day 2: Polignano a Mare and Monopoli

The second day of this 5-day Puglia road trip begins in Polignano a Mare, one of the most picturesque coastal towns in southern Italy. You can get here from Bari by car or regional train, so the journey won’t take up much of your day.

Polignano a Mare: Lama Monachile and spectacular sea views

Lama Monachile beach in Polignano a Mare, Puglia

There are plenty of things to do in Polignano a Mare, but the main reason we originally wanted to visit was Lama Monachile Beach.

We’d seen photographs of this tiny beach on Instagram and immediately fallen in love with it. And when we finally saw it for ourselves, it didn’t disappoint one bit!

Lama Monachile sits between dramatic cliffs, with sea caves and beautiful views all around. It’s one of those places you’ll want to photograph from every angle.

But the town offers more than its famous beach. Look out for the streets decorated with poetry, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and the Volare steps.

Polignano also brings back some delicious memories: we ate one of the best fish sandwiches we’ve ever tried and tasted the local caffè speciale, a distinctive coffee speciality.

Although Polignano a Mare is small, we’d spend most of the day here. Explore slowly, enjoy the views and leave time for a good lunch. In the late afternoon, head to Monopoli, around 15–20 minutes away by car or train.

Monopoli: A charming harbour and historic streets

The picturesque historic centre of Monopoli in Puglia

Monopoli is a lovely place to spend a few hours at the end of the day. Its compact historic centre is easy to explore; we took roughly three hours to discover its main sights.

Don’t miss the picturesque old harbour, Monopoli Cathedral and Piazza Garibaldi, with its civic tower.

Piazza Garibaldi is also perfect for sitting on a terrace with an Italian aperitivo. Or treat yourself to fresh fish or pizza at one of the best restaurants in Monopoli. We loved the relaxed atmosphere here!

Day 3: Alberobello and Locorotondo

On day three of your Puglia 5-day itinerary, head inland to Alberobello, approximately 30 minutes by car from Monopoli.

Alberobello: The famous trulli houses

Traditional white trulli houses in Alberobello, Puglia

Alberobello is one of the most distinctive villages in Italy thanks to its traditional trulli: small white stone houses topped with cone-shaped roofs. Its trulli districts are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The town centre is compact, but incredibly picturesque. Our advice is simple: wander through its little streets, take in the architecture and don’t rush from one viewpoint to the next.

In our detailed guide to Alberobello, we also explain where we found free parking before exploring the village.

Allow around four to five hours to visit at a relaxed pace. You’ll then have time to discover another beautiful town nearby.

Locorotondo: White houses, colourful flowers and lovely views

Whitewashed streets in Locorotondo, Puglia

Locorotondo is officially recognised as one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, and we can completely understand why.

Its small historic centre is full of pretty corners. What impressed us most was the contrast between the colourful flowers and the brilliant white buildings. It’s beautiful!

Our guide to things to see in Locorotondo covers its main attractions. Two or three hours should be enough for a leisurely walk around the village.

If you’re not too tired and have some time left, you could end the day in nearby Cisternino, another charming whitewashed town.

Day 4: Ostuni, Puglia’s White City

Ostuni, the White City in southern Italy

Day four of your 5 days in Puglia takes you to Ostuni, one of our favourite places in the region.

We expected Ostuni to be beautiful, but it still managed to surprise us. Imagine a hilltop town filled with gleaming white buildings and surrounded by historic walls. That’s Ostuni!

Known as La Città Bianca, or the White City, it has much more to offer than its photogenic streets. Make sure you see the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Piazza della Libertà.

Our favourite activity, though, was simply getting lost in its maze of narrow lanes. Every turn reveals another picturesque corner, and that’s what makes visiting Ostuni so special.

We recommend spending the day here if you can. Towards evening, travel on to Lecce, the last stop on this route.

Day 5: Lecce, the Baroque jewel of southern Italy

Historic streets and Baroque architecture in Lecce, Puglia

Welcome to one of the most beautiful cities in Puglia! Lecce is famous for its elaborate Baroque architecture and warm, golden-coloured stone.

We loved walking through its streets and admiring Basilica di Santa Croce, one of the most impressive churches we’ve seen in Italy. Its incredibly detailed façade is a real work of art.

You’ll also find Roman remains, elegant squares and other important monuments. For more ideas, have a look at our complete guide to things to do in Lecce.

Food is another excellent reason to explore the city. Try some local dishes in a traditional restaurant or pick up a Puglian pastry and enjoy it in one of Lecce’s squares.

Allow at least a full day to explore. It’s a wonderful finale to a Puglia itinerary for 5 days focused on culture, towns and local cuisine.

Itinerary 2: a 5-day Puglia beach Itinerary in Salento

If the reason you’re visiting Puglia is its turquoise water and beautiful coastline, this second route is for you. We’ve selected some of our favourite swimming spots and best beaches in Puglia for five unforgettable days by the sea.

For this Puglia beach itinerary, we’d suggest flying into Brindisi Airport if the connections work for you, as it’s closer to Salento. Bari Airport is another option, but you’ll have a longer journey south.

Renting a car is particularly useful for this route. Some of the beaches and small coves are difficult to reach on public transport, and having your own car gives you much more flexibility.

Day 1: Torre dell’Orso and the Faraglioni di Sant’Andrea

Torre dell'Orso beach and turquoise sea in Salento

Start at Torre dell’Orso, one of the most beautiful beaches near Lecce. Its long sandy shore, turquoise water and dramatic natural setting make it a fantastic introduction to Salento.

You can choose a private beach club with loungers and umbrellas or find space in the free public sections. The sea is so beautiful that Torre dell’Orso is sometimes nicknamed the Caribbean of Salento.

If you’re like us and can’t spend the whole day lying on the beach, take a walk towards the cliffs to admire the view over the bay. The panorama is spectacular!

Nearby, the Faraglioni di Sant’Andrea are impressive limestone sea stacks and rock formations. They’re well worth seeing before your first day ends.

Day 2: Marina Serra and Cala Acquaviva

Natural swimming pool of Marina Serra in Puglia

For the second day of this 5-day Puglia beach itinerary, we’ve chosen two extraordinary places. Just don’t expect long stretches of sand: these are rocky swimming spots, and you’ll need to find a comfortable place for your towel.

Marina Serra is a stunning natural swimming pool surrounded by striking rock formations. The water is incredibly clear, and the setting is unlike a typical beach. We loved it so much that we found it difficult to leave!

Cala Acquaviva, meanwhile, is a tiny cove tucked between beautiful cliffs. A swim here, surrounded by the natural scenery, is one of the most memorable things you can do on a beach holiday in Puglia.

The two places are close enough to combine in one day by car, depending on your starting point and traffic. But there’s no need to rush: if your idea of a perfect holiday is complete relaxation, choose just one and enjoy it properly.

Day 3: Marina di Pescoluse, the Maldives of Salento

Marina di Pescoluse beach, the Maldives of Salento

Marina di Pescoluse is a must for anyone who loves sandy beaches. This part of the coast is often called the Maldives of Salento (Maldive del Salento), partly because of a beach club with that name and partly because of its wonderfully clear water and pale, fine sand.

The colours really do remind you of a tropical destination!

There are both private beach establishments and free public areas, so you can choose the option that suits your budget and preferences.

If you’re looking for a relaxing beach day during your 5 days in Puglia, this is one of our top recommendations.

Day 4: Baia Verde near Gallipoli

Baia Verde beach near Gallipoli in Puglia

Today we’re heading towards Gallipoli, an area famous for its gorgeous coastline. Of all the beaches around Gallipoli, Baia Verde is our personal favourite.

This long stretch of fine sand, around three kilometres in length, works well for different kinds of travellers. Families appreciate its space and facilities, while visitors looking for a livelier atmosphere will also find beach clubs, music and places to grab a drink.

And there’s the wonderful turquoise water, of course! Baia Verde is a great choice if you want an easy, classic beach day in Puglia.

Day 5: Punta Prosciutto

Punta Prosciutto beach with clear turquoise water in Puglia

The final stop on our Puglia beach itinerary is Punta Prosciutto, one of the region’s most famous beaches.

Its natural surroundings are beautiful, the sand is wonderfully soft and the water can be incredibly calm and clear. On a good day, it looks almost like a swimming pool.

Spend your last day swimming, relaxing and enjoying the view. We honestly can’t think of a better way to finish five days exploring the beaches of Puglia.

Itinerary 3: Puglia in 5 days – a mix of towns and beaches

Can’t choose between sightseeing and spending time by the sea? Why not do both? This final Puglia 5-day itinerary combines historic towns, famous landmarks and beautiful beaches.

Because you’ll be covering different areas in a short time, we strongly recommend a rental car for this route. It helps you spend more time enjoying the places you’ve come to see and less time waiting for connections.

Day 1: Bari and Pane e Pomodoro Beach

Begin with a guided walking tour of Bari to discover the city’s main landmarks and understand its history. You can also visit the sights independently if you prefer.

After exploring Bari Vecchia, follow the seafront promenade towards Pane e Pomodoro Beach, one of the most accessible beaches in the city.

It’s a lovely place to unwind, and you can finish your first day with a drink while enjoying the evening light by the sea.

Day 2: Polignano a Mare and Lama Monachile

Spend the morning exploring Polignano a Mare. Take time to walk through the old town, seek out the panoramic viewpoints and enjoy its lively atmosphere.

In the afternoon, head down to Lama Monachile, the famous little beach tucked between steep cliffs. It’s one of the most photogenic places in Puglia, although it can be extremely crowded in summer.

If you’re doing this 5-day Puglia road trip during the busiest months, arrive early and be prepared to share the view with plenty of other visitors.

Day 3: Alberobello and Capitolo Beach

Alberobello is one of the most iconic stops in Puglia and is easy to explore in half a day if you keep to the main trulli districts.

After a morning among the white stone houses, drive towards Capitolo, a beach area near Monopoli.

You’ll find sandy stretches, beach clubs, bars and plenty of places to relax. It’s the perfect contrast: trulli in the morning and the Adriatic Sea in the afternoon!

Day 4: Lecce and Grotta della Poesia

Start the day discovering the Baroque beauty of Lecce. Join a guided tour or explore independently, stopping at the churches, squares and historic streets that make the city so special.

Later, drive towards Grotta della Poesia, a spectacular natural sinkhole set among the cliffs near Roca Vecchia. It’s one of the best-known natural sights on this part of Puglia’s coast.

Allow around two hours to appreciate the scenery. Before visiting, check the latest access rules and restrictions, as these can change and swimming may not be permitted.

Day 5: Torre dell’Orso and Otranto

Finish your 5 days in Puglia with a relaxing day at Torre dell’Orso, enjoying its sandy beach and clear water.

Towards late afternoon, head to nearby Otranto. Its compact old town is full of lovely lanes and picturesque corners, making it perfect for an evening stroll.

To end your holiday, sit down for dinner at one of Otranto’s restaurants. You’ll probably already be wishing you had a few more days in this beautiful region!

Map of our three Puglia 5-day itineraries

We’ve created a map showing the places and beaches included in all three routes, so you can compare them before choosing which Puglia itinerary works best for you.

  • Blue: towns and cities itinerary.
  • Burgundy: Salento beaches itinerary.
  • Yellow: mixed towns and beaches itinerary.

Practical tips for planning 5 days in Puglia

Choose your airport carefully. Bari is a convenient starting point for the towns-and-cities route, while Brindisi is often more practical if you’re concentrating on Salento’s beaches.

Don’t underestimate the distances. A 5-day Puglia itinerary works best when you focus on a few areas rather than trying to see every corner of the region.

Consider the season. Spring and early autumn are particularly pleasant for sightseeing, while summer is ideal for enjoying the sea but can bring heat, crowds and more difficult parking.

Think about transport before booking accommodation. A car makes beach-hopping and visiting smaller inland villages easier. If you don’t want to drive, prioritise towns with good rail connections.

Frequently asked questions about 5 days in Puglia

Is 5 days enough to visit Puglia?

Yes, 5 days in Puglia is enough for a memorable first trip, provided you plan realistically. You can enjoy historic cities, pretty villages, beautiful beaches and local food. However, the region is large, so it’s better to focus on one of our suggested routes than try to see absolutely everything.

What is the best time to visit Puglia for 5 days?

For a combination of sightseeing and pleasant weather, April to June and September to October are excellent choices. The towns are generally less crowded than in the height of summer. July and August are popular for beach holidays, although they can be hot and busy, especially along the coast.

What’s the best way to get around Puglia?

For most of these routes, renting a car is the easiest option. It lets you visit smaller towns, scenic coves and beaches at your own pace. Regional trains and buses can be useful for journeys between bigger destinations, but their coverage and frequency vary.

Can you visit Puglia in 5 days with children?

Absolutely! Puglia can be a fantastic destination for families. Children often enjoy the beaches, Alberobello’s unusual trulli houses and wandering around Bari’s old town. If you’re travelling with little ones, we’d suggest a slower pace with fewer stops per day and plenty of breaks.

Can you do a 5-day Puglia itinerary without a car?

Yes, but some adjustments are necessary. Bari, Polignano a Mare, Monopoli and Lecce are relatively convenient by train, while getting to smaller villages and remote beaches can be more challenging. Focus on the better-connected towns and consider organised day trips for the harder-to-reach places.

Final thoughts: which Puglia itinerary will you choose?

So, what do you think of our three ways to spend 5 days in Puglia?

We’ve tried to include something for everyone: one route for beautiful towns and historic cities, one for the beaches of Salento and one combining the best of both worlds.

Whether you’re dreaming of whitewashed streets, Baroque architecture or crystal-clear water, we hope this guide helps you plan an unforgettable trip. We’re sure you’ll fall in love with Puglia just as much as we did!
